There was a time when large areas of the country used to down tools and stop work. Not for any sinister or unscrupulous reason, that's just what used to happen when large industries that were concentrated in specific locations around the country took their summer holidays.
It seems like a long time ago now. The idea of vast swathes of the working population all taking a two week break just doesn't happen any more. The need to keep production going 24 hours a day, 7 days a week can be the difference between surviving or not.
