Students are usually looking for an internship that will give them practical knowledge and experience in the field they plan to enter upon graduating from college. If they want to be a doctor they usually look for work in a lab and if they want to go to law school, they usually apply for internships at law offices. While this is a good idea for many students, having a more general internship will prepare students for a vast array of different career choices and provide them with basic skills that will prove very beneficial no matter what career they pursue.
An internship college that teaches students an array of valuable skills will be helpful no matter what major they are currently pursuing or what type of job they plan on applying for after graduation. Future doctors getting work in labs or future lawyers working in law offices or future artists working in graphic design firms will prove to be helpful in conjuring up some experience in their respective field. If this does not work out, however, students should feel confident that an internship college in a more general field would also prove beneficial.
In fact, an internship that will teach students important skills or allow them to develop existing skills may be more helpful in the long run. The student will surely get the proper training and experience in their respective field either upon graduation or as they move through their course progression. Having an internship college that gives them the opportunity to learn new skills will be beneficial in their future careers. Internships often underutilize their interns to a great degree. An internship college that has their students file or do data entry all day is something to be avoided. Students will not learn much from getting coffee or washing dishes for a law office, or filing papers and reports for a lab. This is almost a waste of time, even if the student wants to pursue a job in the same field as the office or lab they file papers in. Filing can be done anywhere, even at home, so getting filing experience in a lab is no different than filing in a library.
Students should look for an internship college that gives them a real chance at bettering themselves as individuals. When they go on job interviews, employers will be looking for things other than grades and where their internships were. They will be evaluating the student's capacity to lead and learn new skills quickly. Students who are given the chance to develop their leadership skills at an internship will be a step ahead of their peers in that department.
Working in an environment that promotes development is a tremendous opportunity whether it is in an internship, part-time job or full-time job. Getting to work with a company that uses their interns to a great degree and gives them added responsibility can be a huge asset to any college student as they prepare themselves for the real world.
