Going to college is more than books, dorms and bad meal plan food. It's more than making friends and going to parties and such. An important part of college takes place outside of the classroom and dorm rooms and in the real world where students should be getting their foot in the door and learning new skills or developing existing ones.
Too often do students decide not to take advantage of a college internship and instead carry with them the notion from high school that they must get good grades and they will succeed. High school often teaches students that they need only to get good grades and perhaps join a club or two to get ready for college. This may be useful advice as students prepare themselves for college, but once in college students should look to broaden their horizons and develop themselves as individuals and potential job candidates for after they graduate.
Simply going to class, reading the books, studying for tests and getting good grades is not enough to develop as a young man nor woman. It can also get very mundane if that is all the student has going on in his or her life. Employers are looking for students that have something more to offer than their fellow classmates. Classes are meant to give students knowledge about whatever subject matter they are studying, but real world experiences from a college internship give students the chance to apply some of that knowledge in a practical manner. Too many students pass up the opportunity to get some valuable experience an environment outside of the classroom.
Students too often think that their degree is their ticket to a high paying job in whatever field that degree is in. While it certainly helps, with more and more people getting a college education, students need to now look for other ways to separate themselves from the rest of the herd. This is often done through extracurricular activities such as joining and participating in clubs, sports and having a college internship that teaches them other things that classes may leave out. Leadership is a big skill to have and develop so that upon graduation the student is ready to step in and be a valuable part of a company, office or lab.
Leadership skills are something that every student should strive to attain before leaving college. A leader will have a much better shot at getting hired than a student that goes to a job interview and timidly answers questions thrown at them. Somebody with the confidence to lead will be impressive in their interview and will exude confidence throughout the question/answer session. They will also have the confidence to ask good questions about the company and the position they are interviewing for. Leadership like this is often attained through real world situations and experiences. Not in the classroom.
While studying hard and getting good grades certainly can set the student apart from others, it is often not enough to rocket them into a good job. Employers look for things in addition to grades when hiring their new employees.
