Landing a College Internship That Really Pays

Getting paid at an internship is an added bonus for college students who are used to the usual unpaid internship in a stuffy office building or laboratory. Finding an internship that utilizes their interns more and gives interns more responsibility and opportunities for making money can be like striking gold for many college students. When the internship pays both monetarily and otherwise, students have often found the jackpot.

A college internship can be a valuable part of any student's college career. With so much to learn in college, classes may not be able to do the trick alone. Joining clubs and participating in intramurals or other extracurricular activities outside of the classroom is great, but it does not really give students a taste of the real world, which can be valuable upon graduation. Students that work or participate in good internships will be at a huge advantage over students that choose not to participate in any of these opportunities. Having a college internship will not only help with the bills, but can help the student develop into a more well-rounded individual.

Finding recent graduates that have participated in an internship is often something recruiters look for in their initial recruiting phases or stages. While having a college internship on the resume may make the student stand out a little bit, it will not land them the job. Interviewers are looking for students that took something away from their internship and are ready to step into the real world and handle whatever is thrown their way. Potential employers often shun students that seem timid or unwilling to act in a leadership capacity. Getting the experience necessary to develop leadership and other skills is important for students that may have a bit of growing to do.

Growing and developing is what college is all about. Anybody that says it's about going to class and getting good grades alone is dead wrong. Employers get bored of meeting the same students over and over. Those that got good grades and believe this sets them apart from the rest. Good grades do not qualify students to step into leadership roles or even lesser roles. Only real life experience can truly get a student ready for their future. This is often accomplished through the assistance of a college internship.

Not every internship will prove valuable, however. Many internships underutilize their interns. They may have them file, input data into a computer, answer phones or make coffee for the office staff. This is not helping them to become better leaders or more ready for the real world. Only in internships that really allow their interns to contribute will students get the opportunity to develop as individuals. Developing important skills such as sales skills, leadership skills and organizational management skills will prove valuable in any field.

Students often feel that only business field students will benefit from such an internship. All careers could use somebody that has this skill set, however. Leadership is something that not everybody is ready to handle. Being ready upon graduation will set students apart from their peers and help them land the job they really want.
