Big Brother is everywhere. I'm not talking about the channel four reality (if you can call it that) TV show, I'm talking about people watching your every move, your every word, your every action, your every reaction...

CCTV is everywhere, which is a good thing, if only they improved the quality of the cameras so the authorities could actually make out a little detail on the faces of culprits. Every phone call, text message, email, Twitter message and Facebook message is recorded; every debit or credit card transaction noted; every time you sit on the toilet seat, someone somewhere knows about it. Well, not quite, but it's heading that way.

And on the increase is the use of vehicle tracking using GPS, so everyone who works from their car be warned - every time you pull over for a snack, smoke, snooze or slash your company will be able to tell exactly when, where, how often and for how long you stopped off. Nothing is sacred!

The reasoning behind vehicle tracking is to lower costs, which may sound bizarre at the offset but when you think about operating a fleet of vehicles can be a huge cost for your business and during these difficult financial times companies may feel the need to drive down costs, and vehicle tracking can be a viable option to do this. GPS systems can track vehicles to the second via real time multiple operators on maps covering the UK and Europe.

Vehicle tracking can provide detailed reports including such information as journey history, idling time, details of journey, vehicle speeds, stop points, current location, travel events, full summaries and any other relevant information that can be customised to suit your business.

Advantages from using vehicle tracking systems include: a reduction in operational costs through lower fuel costs, maintenance charges, lower insurance premiums and reduced communication costs; increased revenue due to improved productivity and vehicle utilisation; improved customer service by being able to notify exact location of vehicle; reduce the carbon footprint of your company by reducing idling and fuel useage through inefficient route planning.

And of course vehicle tracking can increase the security of your fleet of cars - and added protection for your investment - as being able to locate your fleet 24 hours a day is an effective safety measure, enabling you to make sure that your drivers are safe as well as the cargo contained in the vehicles. This will lower insurance premiums also. Drivers of vehicles that use tracking devices also tend to have fewer accidents, as they are more aware of the speed with which they are travelling. They also incur fewer speeding tickets.

Employees may feel a lack of trust when being told about the implementation of vehicle tracking, and they would not be wrong in thinking that vehicle tracking is yet another method of invading privacy, yet the benefits of vehicle tracking are clear, which is why vehicle tracking is on the increase, even during these difficult financial times.

And if vehicle tracking improves road safety, reduces CO2 emissions and improves the efficiency of businesses across the UK, then it isn't a bad thing. We're not talking about ID cards here! After all, the technology is there so why not use it if it will improve our quality of life?
