Jennifer Hudson has endured her fair share of heartbreak lately. Late last year her mother, brother and nephew were all gunned down in a homicide that gripped the nation and brought on tears and heartbreak for the talented young singer and actress as well as for her grieving family members. Since the loss, Hudson has remained secluded, privately mourning. As a result, the news that Hudson will be one of the performers at the upcoming Grammy Awards on February 8 should please many of her fans and is a signal that Hudson is ready to step back out into the spotlight, at least for the moment.
Hudson has three nods for: Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "Spotlight," Best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocals for "I'm Only His Woman" and Best R&B album for Jennifer Hudson. Also performing that night are Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Coldplay, the Jonas Brothers, Lil' Wayne and Katy Perry. The entire night will be broadcast live on the CBS network.
Jennifer Hudson first emerged on the national music scene when she appeared on the third season of American Idol. Although she initially struggled during the first part of the show, she rose up in the rankings after a performance of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing." She followed up with a powerful rendition of Barry Manilow's "Weekend in New England." Nevertheless, Hudson finished seventh in the competition, not quite making it to the top of the game.
After American Idol, Hudson was cast in the role of Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls. She starred alongside the likes of Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy. For her performance, she won the praise and admiration of critics and fans-especially after a show stopping rendition of the song, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." She later earned several awards for her part in the movie, including the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Supporting Role and, later, the much coveted Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2007.
Hudson also appeared in the movie Sex in the City as well as in an upcoming film, The Secret Life of Bees.
Her debut in the recording industry came after she signed a deal with Arista Records in 2008. Her debut single "Spotlight" made a smash on radio stations around the nation, and later in the year she performed the national anthem at the Democratic National Convention. Her full-length album, Jennifer Hudson, arrived in September 2008 and peaked at the number two spot on the U.S. charts.
