Amy Winehouse is trying a stab at being healthy at the Le Sport Spa in the Caribbean, but it's not going all that well. Staff members at the posh spa resort have reportedly been refusing her drinks because they don't take kindly to her wildly drunken behavior. Winehouse has defended herself, as reported by the Daily Mirror by retorting that, "Yes, I've had a few drinks but I'm on holiday-I'm just young and having fun." The troubled British diva arrived in the Caribbean in December and has thus far been accused of everything from tossing a drink at a passing tourist to throwing up at a breakfast buffet. It's hard to gauge how much of the reporting is actually accurate, although Winehouse is following the footsteps of British bad boy Keith Richards, with her boozed up habits and out-of-control behavior. Winehouse is dealing with an incredibly rocky marriage-leading many to believe that divorce is on the horizon-and her ongoing problems with drugs and alcohol have constantly placed her on the covers of magazines and tabloids around the world.
Few will dispute the fact that Winehouse has the voice of a soul legend. Her debut album, Frank, did well both critically and commercially in Britain and was nominated for a Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up, Back to Black, set her up for an astounding six Grammy Award nominations and five wins. Three of them were for: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Amidst all of this fame though, Winehouse found herself struggling with health issues that continue to plague her on into today. Even though she is only 26 years old, Winehouse appears much older than her youthful years, mainly as a direct result of constant alcohol and drug abuse.
After the release of Frank, Winehouse started getting comparisons to heavyweights in the industry like Sarah Vaughan, Macy Gray and many others. The album spawned the singles "Stronger than Me," "F*ck Me Pumps," "In My Bed," "Take the Box" and "You Sent Me Flying." The title is in reference to one of Winehouse's heroes, Frank Sinatra.
Life after Frank got even better for Winehouse with the release of the international smash hit, Back to Black. It entered the Billboard 200 at the number seven spot, and within a matter of months it approached the 5X Platinum mark, making it the best selling album of 2007. It is most well known for its top single, "Rehab." It peaked at the number nine spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Other hot singles were "You Know I'm No Good" and the title track, "Back to Black." Amy Winehouse tickets were fast becoming some of the hottest items in the music world.
However great her voice was and however well her records continued to sell, Winehouse caused a stir on her 2007 Fall Tour. Completely inebriated, she started swearing and cursing at audience members during a show in Birmingham after they booed her for her tortured renditions of songs. She abruptly cancelled any further shows for the rest of the year.
While she picked herself up and continued touring the following year, she did not give up her drinking or drug habits and has been under hospital care since November 2008. Thus, Winehouse's excuse for a drink because she is "on holiday" may not be entirely accurate. Nevertheless, her fans are many and they hope to see her back on the stage soon.
