Don't Cut Corners When It Comes To Fire Training

Many requirements are overlooked by companies around the UK, either to cut costs or through negligence, but something that is a must for companies in all different business sectors is fire training.

According to the most recently published UK government fire statistics published in November 2008, there were 31,000 workplace fires for the final quarter. Whether you find that to be a large figure or not, the fact is that fires do take place at the workplace, so it is advisable that you're prepared and have the correct training and knowledge on how to safely tackle a fire situation.

Fire safety is not to be taken lightly - a fire safety training course should be specific to the role of the employee and should be carried out by a fire training specialist company, of which they are readily accessible and won't cost your company an arm and a leg.

It is advisable for large companies to appoint fire marshals who can take on an active organisational responsibility during the course of a fire. Fire marshals will require more detailed and specific fire training and fire training companies can offer extensive training.

Many fire training courses include learning about current fire safety legislation; the effects of fire on a company building; the chemical process that results in fire; the main causes of fire; effective evacuation procedures; how to react to fire; fire protection methods and fire extinguisher training.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that fire risk assessments have to take place regularly and a fire management plan drawn up. This must identify fire hazards and various ways to minimise risk of fire. Again, you would need to gain guidance from a fire training officer whose expertise can be put to use.

Fire extinguisher training is a fundamental part of fire training. Some people may scoff and think 'how hard can it be to pull the pin and aim the extinguisher at the fire?' Well, there certainly is more to using a fire extinguisher efficiently and effectively and fire extinguisher training will show exactly how it should be done. Knowing which fire extinguisher to use for the type of fire is fundamental, as well as learning the correct technique for attacking fire, the features of a fire extinguisher and most importantly actually having a go at using one!

The best way to learn how to do something is by actually doing it! Fire training incorporates live fire fighting demonstrations which give you a real insight into exactly what needs to be done to extinguish a fire, which is time well spent, just ask anyone who has experienced a fire situation of any shape or size!

Fire training courses not only include fire extinguisher training and fire risk assessment of your place of work, it also involves fire drill and evacuation training, assessment and recognition of fire risks in your workplace, general fire safety procedures and distribution of specific roles for staff members in the event of a fire.

Why take the risk? Allow your staff every chance of escaping fire uninjured - and even better, give them the tools to control small fires in order to avoid a blaze and detrimental consequences, not only for your business but also to avoid any tragedies. It really isn't worth cutting corners when it comes to fire training.
