In a year of Broadway history making shows such as Soul of Shaolin another breath-taking musical hit has come from another country for a limited showing in New York. Tanguera, the Tango Musical is one of the biggest hits in Argentina right now, and is certain to be just as big in the US. The musical book is written by Dolores Espeja and Diego Romay with music by Gerardo Gardelin and lyrics by Eladia Blazquez. It is directed by Omar Pacheco and produced by Diego Romay.
The musical tells the story of two young people, Giselle a French immigrant and Lorenzo a dock worker. Giselle is deceived by a prostitution ring, and arrives at the Port of Bruenos Aires hoping for a better life and meets Lorenzo and they fall in love at first sight. But Giselle is forced into prostitution and made to become a nightclub singer by Guadencio, a local gang leader. The story progresses as Lorenzo must fight to win Giselle and rescue her from the clutches of Guadencio. After working as a prostitute for some time Giselle becomes a celebrated cabaret tango star, a "tanguera."
This musical has not just gained notoriety in its native Argentina, but it has also become famous in Spain, where it inspired a passionate interest in the tango. It has also been celebrated in China, Mexico City, Tokyo, Santiago, and Berlin. It is an international hit that has inspired wide-spread passion and interest in the medium of dance, particularly the tango. Much of this interest is due to the incredible skill of the musical's choreographer Mora Godoy who has been called the Queen of Tango. Godoy also has performed the leading role in the musical.
