Movin' Out is a musical that uses the songs of Billy Joel as a backdrop for a story told through dance, as choreographed by Twyla Tharp. The opening song to the musical is "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" which first appeared on Joel's album The Stranger, which he released in 1977. The album reached number two on Pop Albums and Joel received two Grammy Awards for the song "Just The Way You Are," which also appears in the musical.
Both the main characters in the musical, Eddie and Brenda, take their names from "Scene in an Italian Restaurant." Eddie and Brenda are the king and queen of the prom in the song, and in the musical they are the golden couple among a group of high school friends but early on in the story they decide to break up. The musical tells the tale of what happens to their group of friends after they decide to part ways. Other characters are Anthony, who is introduced through the title song for the musical, "Movin' Out." The other characters in the musical are James from the song by the same title, and Judy from "Yes, Judy, Yes."
The musical premiered on October 24, 2002, and you can now by Movin' Out tickets for the national tour which is opening at the Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont, Illinois, on the 20th of February of this year. Other songs from Billy Joel are "Just the Way You Are," "The Longest time," "Uptown Girl," "Captain Jack," and the incredibly famous "We Didn't Start the Fire." The musical is unique and almost cannot be called a musical at all, as the songs simply serve as a loosely illustrative backdrop to the story, which is told through dance.
One of the central themes to the play is found in another Billy Joel song that is also in the musical is "Angry Young Man," with the closing lines which add hope to a plot that seems to be firmly headed down a sad path is. The lines are: "Yes there's always a place for the angry young man/With his working class ties and his radical plans/He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl/And he's always at home with his back to the wall." Final words "He's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost/And struggles and bleeds as he hangs on his cross/And likes to be known as the angry young man." are keenly expressive of the pride and strength in characters that are gradually rising from the ashes of their former existence.
Movin' Out won two Tony Awards in 2003 for Best Choreography and Best Orchestration. The musical deals with key historical issues surrounding the period when the musical takes place, which mostly occurs before and after Vietnam. Movin' Out tickets are going to be hard to come by, as this is an incredibly popular show, but there will be tickets available online so you can be certain of finding seats for this incredible music and dance experience.
