Students that have an internship on their resumes often get noticed much quicker and more often than students who do not. An internship may give students an added advantage over their peers, as the experiences they have while participating in an internship can go beyond what they learn in the classroom. In some cases, students find that an internship has a greater impact on preparing themselves for the real world after graduation.
A college internship is something that many students take advantage of while in college. Students missing out on this opportunity often regret having done so and find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to interview and compete for those coveted jobs later in life. Students learn so much from an internship and are exposed to a great deal of experiences that will make them stronger candidates for jobs in the future. Having already gone through their initial placement into the working world, many students feel like they are ready to take on bigger and better things, often times above what a normal college graduate will be ready for. This is a welcome scenario for many employers, as they wish more of their recent hires would be ready to take on larger projects and more responsibility.
Missing out on a college internship would be a big mistake for students looking to differentiate themselves from the field. Having an internship on their resume certainly helps to get them noticed, but will do nothing when the interviewer is talking to them face to face, unless the internship proved a valuable way to spend a few hours each day or each week. Many internships present no real challenges or responsibility to the interns participating in the program. These students may now be able to place the experience on their resume, but when it comes time to interview and convey how that internship helps make them better qualified than the other applicants applying for the job, they may feel lost.
Being able to speak about real experiences and demonstrate leadership ability through stories or sharing lessons learned will be a tremendous boost to a student's interview. Employers want students ready to take on the challenges that their company will throw at them. The best way to determine who will be up to the challenge is to measure the interviewees by their past behavior and predict future behavior and capabilities based on this. This is by no means a flawless system, but having the ability to judge a student by their past experiences and behaviors and opportunities they grasped will assist interviewers in hiring their new teams.
Students with a college internship under their belt will be ready to talk to employers about why they will be assets to the company and how they have had experience in a leadership role in the past. Whether or not a student has participate din a college internship will not make or break the student's chances of being hired, but being able to demonstrate past behaviors that demonstrate leadership and a readiness for the next level will certainly help the student in getting hired.
