Students are constantly seeking new ways to discover their true calling in life. Some students do this by taking a variety of classes early on in their college careers, while others do so through an internship that exposes them to different fields. Whatever their means, students should take the time to find what they really, truly love to do and run with it.
A college internship is usually a good way to determine what they want to do later in life. Through an internship, a college student will be able to expose him or herself to different fields and get a small taste of each. Discovering what they really want to do can have a tremendous effect on the student's ability to choose a major and find their calling in life. Classes give students a good introductory look at a career field or major, but they really do not show them what it will be like to work in the field day in and day out. Through a college internship, a student will get a taste of the real world and will be able to know for sure if they like or dislike the career field.
The best internships offer students the chance to take on some real responsibility so that they can get a feel for what it is like to act in the job. Students merely observing may believe they like something, or think they do not, based on their observations of another person doing the work. They will not know for sure if it is something they enjoy doing until they get their hands dirty, so to speak, and actually perform some actual work. A college internship that gives students the chance to really take action in the field is beneficial because it shows the student what it will really be like working in the career field they are testing. Getting a feel for things is the best way to determine if it is something they will enjoy doing for the rest of their lives.
Not all internships offer students this opportunity, however. Many greatly limit their interns when it comes to the work they do. They might have them doing mundane office work that does need to get done, but nobody else wants to do the work. Filing, data entry, fetching coffee, these jobs do not really give the student a firsthand look at the career field they are supposed to be getting some experience in. While these jobs, other than maybe the coffee fetching, have to get done so that things can stay organized and running smoothly, companies may be better off hiring somebody to do this work and using their interns for other jobs.
Allowing their interns to get some real experience while participating in the college internship will allow the student to grow and develop their skills. It will also be beneficial to the company, as their young ambition may excite the rest of the office into taking it up a notch. A college internship that gives students the opportunity to take on real responsibility and get a firsthand view of what life is like within the career field can be very valuable.
