The Phantom of the Opera is a fantastic musical experience, set in the Palais Garnier in Paris in the late 1800s and based on the novel published by Gaston Leroux in 1911. The Palais Garnier is a fantastic and historically rich theater, which was first home to the Paris Opera. It was built by Charles Garnier, and was a project that began in 1861 and extended for 14 years. It was finally completed and officially inaugurated on January 5, 1875.

The story of The Phantom of the Opera is one that has transcended the decades and still stands as one of the most beautiful and ostentatious pieces of literature, from a city renowned for its literary mastery. In the story of The Phantom, there is a rumored to be a lake under the building, which plays a heavily important role in the story. The rumor, according to resources, is not entirely incorrect, as a water table was found during the initial stages of the construction of the theater. It was, reportedly, drained into a gigantic well, which carried the gigantic stage and fly tower.

Gaston Leroux was a journalist, who was adept at finding out the deepest and most fascinating stories, and who used this gift to excellent effect when he published this culminating work. Little did he know when he completed the novel, but it would go on to become one of the iconic writings of his day. A prolific writer, he had written a total of 60 novels by the time he died at the age of 59 in 1927, although many apart from Phantom and his The Mystery of the Yellow Room are now very difficult to come by.

Today, the story is most known for the stage adaptation, which was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber with writers Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart. It follows the events of the book, with main character, Christine, a young woman who is taught to sing beautifully by The Phantom who later falls in love with her. Extremely successful, the musical began previews on January 9, 1988, and is still opened today.

As of February 22, 2009, the musical has played a total of 8,763 performances. It has also been the recipient of numerous Tony Awards, including: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography, and Best Direction of a Musical in 1988. That year Michael Crawford also won the award for Best Actor in a Musical and Judy Kaye won Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Both have had key roles on Broadway since then.

The Phantom of the Opera tickets are for one of the "must see" events on Broadway. A necessary establishment of the New York theater experience, this incredible show has everything to offer. It is now one of the most well-known and well-loved shows in the world, and has continued to bring in audiences since it first opened in 1988. The Phantom is certain to sell out early, however, so be sure that you get your tickets online.
