The United States and the whole world for that matter are going through a tough financial situation. Here in America, the national unemployment rate is over 7 percent and is expected to rise to at least 9 percent and up to 10 or more percent by the end of the year. State jobs, like those in California, are being cut, and teachers, correctional officers, and other state employees are feeling the impact of getting less hours or, worse, being laid off.

During the toughest economic period since the Great Depression, desperate times calls for desperate measures, and many are having to cut unnecessary expenses. These expenses could include, but are not limited to, frequent restaurant visits, shopping sprees, vacations and even mini trips, and services that are now being called "luxuries". Those with wage decreases are forced to cancel services and break contracts with their cell phone, satellite radio, and even TV providers. Worse, others are forced to move out of their current dwelling to find cheaper housing elsewhere.

In an era that focuses so much on technology and the benefits of having luxuries like this at our disposal, it's hard to imagine what it would be like being unable to watch your favorite TV show on high-definition, or HD, even though there are millions of people in the world who haven't even been exposed to this sort of thing. Having to cancel or downgrade your current satellite or cable service might seem like a very bad thing at first, but you'd be surprised to learn it might not be such a bad thing.

With an antenna, you have more access to local TV programming that is not available with cable and satellite due to bandwidth restrictions. Viewers have reported anywhere from 5 to 20 more local channels at their disposal by switching to an antenna. Second, the picture quality is greatly compromised by cable because of the technology they utilize to get the shows on your end. They rely on data compression, which can contribute to distorted, fuzzy images and loss of sharpness.

Finally, the biggest advantage with an antenna is that it is inexpensive. All it requires is a one-time investment, and you are set. It does not require any contracts, installation costs, monthly fees, surcharges, or any extra fees to lease additional hardware. These companies might have special promotions and introductory rate offers from time to time, but when that period ends, don't be surprised to find a significant increase in your monthly bill. On the other hand, an antenna can cost as little as $50 and as much as $200, and what model and type, indoor or outdoor, you purchase will rely heavily on where you are located. After it is mounted, you are on your way to watching the TV shows you want to watch without worrying about making that monthly payment. If your TV is HD-capable, then you'll have access to local HD channels as well at no extra cost.

Even after this downturn passes and everything is well again with the economy, you might just stick with your antenna because of its many benefits. Just the thought of saving hundreds of dollars per year is an excellent idea.
