His first appearance on Broadway was in The Real Thing in 1984, where he played the part of Henry. In the performance he won the Tony Award for Best Actor in Play and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Working alongside Jacobs is Jack O'Brien as director, Scott Pask as scene designer, Catherine Zuber in costume design, Natasha Katz in lighting design, Elaine J. McCarthy as projection designer, and Leon Rothenberg on sound design. Grammy Award-winner Bob James is the composer and the casting was done by Luara Stancyzk.
