No one really thinks about what compensation they will receive from their insurance company before they run into bad luck and accidentally break a household item or have to make a claim for water damage after a burst water pipe.

When the accident involves physical object it is relatively straightforward to calculate the compensation you will receive as the amount will generally depend on the age of the insured object, the depreciation and the replacement cost.

But what happens when you are involved in a personal injury? Few people know what ccompensation they may be entitled to claim. Obviously you should get your medical expenses covered at least, but can you also claim for suffering and mental anguish? Or loss of income? It is easy to see how people can get confused about how much they are actually entitled to.

A compensation calculator is a formula that is used to calculate estimates of how much you can expect to reasonably claim for. It is a valuable tool to use if you have a personal injury and you are unsure of how much you should make a claim for. It should also be realised that the calculations can only be based on a realistically achievable amount, however as each person's case is unique, amounts may differ and cannot be an absolute guaranteed figure.

Suffering:
This includes the physical suffering you have exposed too as well as psychological trauma and mental anguish you may have experienced. If you have any disability, temporary or permanent such as a broken hand or strained back, this will also be included. How much can you expect to receive for suffering? It varies, but you should always look to include issues that affect your everyday life. Psychiatric or physiotherapy treatment can be expensive and ongoing for example, so you should carefully consider if you think you will have any long term suffering from your accident, expert medical advice will be sought in all cases.

Financial Loss:
Financial losses cover all medical expenses and ongoing treatment for doctors and medical fees, medicines, chiropractor fees, nursing fees, therapy and any other expenses you may have had that can be directly attributed to your accident. Indirect costs, such as transport to the hospital or general commuting to treatment should also be included. Just as important, financial loss can also include loss of income and wages due to being incapacitated or not being able to work fulltime. If you own your own business or are self employed you will need estimates based on prior earnings. Solicitors who specialise in personal injury claims will be able to provide full details of the types of evidence documentation you will need to provide.

Personal Liability:
Your access to compensation depends on the factors mentioned already, it will also be based on your role in the accident. If you bear no responsibility at all, such as being hit by a car while observing traffic rules you will be entitled to full compensation. However, if you were partly responsible for the accident, this will reduce the amount you may be entitled to receive.

An accident compensation calculator will take into consideration all of the above to make an estimate. It can be very helpful to already have an idea of how much you may be entitled to receive before you make any claims.
