Road sweeping is now part of the cleanliness and storm water quality management programs of many cities. While street sweeping was originally intended to just keep the roads clean for aesthetic and safety purposes, the process has evolved into something that has more significant benefits for the city. Through different studies it has been found out that regular and efficient road sweeping can help reduce pollutants that are washed into the storm drains. The process also lowers the micro-pollutants in the air in urban areas. This is why road sweeping, parking lot flushing and other similar services are important in places like the Greater Toronto Area.

Because of the significance of the process of road sweeping, machines used in cleaning the roads are now more compact and perform more effectively and efficiently than the machines used in previous decades. Before the mechanical street sweeper was invented, people were hired in cities to sweep the road for sanitation and waste removal.

The first road sweeping machine, a mechanical sweeper was patented in 1849 by its inventor C.S Bishop. Today mechanical sweepers do not just sweep the street but also vacuum it. The vacuum sweepers are more effective in removing dirt from the road especially small dust. The most common machines now use regenerative air. Most regenerative air road sweeping machines used in Ontario and other cities in the Greater Toronto Area are certified regarding their capacity to pick up dirt that are ten microns or smaller.

One of the more popular companies that produce road sweeping machines is Allianz Madvac. Allianz Madvac creates machines that flush, sweep and vacuum roads. The Allianz MX 450 is considered the world's fastest three-wheel sweeper. It is an efficient machine that is safe and efficient. The Allianz 3000 is a high-capacity machine. It is a high performance machine that is easy to maneuver. Many cities around the world use this.

Green Machines is another company that makes road sweepers. The 636HS compact machine is compact and yet has strong suctions to pick up bigger and heavier debris. Green Machines also creates small outdoor sweepers that can be used for cleaning sidewalks and other outdoor areas that need smaller machines.

Hako creates compact street sweepers that are efficient and easy to maneuver. Hako machines are easy to operate and have powerful vacuum turbines.

Dulevo is another known road sweeping machine manufacturer. Some of the machines from Dulevo include the 200QUATTRO, the 5000 evolution and the 5000 VELOCE.

Nilfisk is another company that is also known for its efficient machines. Nilfisk creates both small and large street sweepers that are appropriate for different situations.

Ausa makes street sweepers with varying degrees of capacities. Ausa road sweeping machines are also easy to maneuver. Ausa machines also make use of a central floating brush sweeping system.

There are many more companies that create machines used for cleaning roads in urban cities. These companies usually create small machines that can be transported to different sites for different projects. The smaller sweepers are also ideal for smaller roads, for parking lots and for small towns. The large machines are usually used for industrial areas and for big city roads.
