Because of the busy traffic and the density of the population in urban areas, it can not be avoided that streets and parking spaces in these areas will get dirty. This is why road Sweeping and flushing are important services in cities- big or small. In the Greater Toronto Area, there are plenty of companies that do road sweeping and parking lot sweeping. These companies also offer services such as snow plowing which can be very important when the town gets hit by several inches to a few feet of snow. Road sweeping and flushing are also important during the snowmelt in the first few days of spring. When snow melts, debris and other dirt are usually left on the streets and parking spaces. Doing road sweeping will ensure that the debris and dirt will not be flushed into the storm drains.

There are different types of technologies used in road cleaning equipments. Some types of road sweeping equipment are more efficient than others for specific situations. Technologies in road cleaning are also undergoing major innovations because it had been discovered over the years since road sweeping began that pollutants can still attach to dirt particles that have the size of 60 microns or even smaller. This means that even if the road appears to be clean after a good road sweeping there could still be traces of heavy metals and other pollutants on the street that can be washed into the storm drains and into the natural bodies of water. Some of the pollutants may also cause health problems for some people especially those who have respiratory problems.

The first type of road sweeping equipment used in the GTA is the mechanical broom sweeper. The mechanical broom sweeper is the first type of road sweeping equipment to exist in the world and not just in Ontario. It is similar to cleaning the pavement with a broom and a dust receptacle. This type of equipment can do a good job when there are sand, trash and bigger kinds of debris on the roads but they do not really do a good job in terms of clearing really small pollutants.

Another type of equipment is the Vacuum sweeper. The vacuum sweeper as its name suggests is a sweeper that sucks in the dirt. A "broom" brushes the dirt and trash onto the vacuum opening so that the dirt can be sucked. This type of machine is more efficient in cleaning small particles from the road. It is also more efficient in cleaning areas near the curb line.

There are different kinds of vacuum sweepers and the vacuum sweepers that use the regenerative air technology have more advantages over the other kinds of vacuum sweepers. Regenerative air sweepers are the most environment-friendly sweepers there are. It is a type of vacuum cleaner that uses a closed loop to clean the roads. These machines are designed to retain the debris inside the machine even as it blasts the air out during the process. This means that less small dirt particles are exhausted into the air. When air is blasted from the machine it easily dislodges most of the debris and dirt from the pavement and then easily "sweeps" them by sucking them in during the pick-up part of the air regeneration cycle.
