Distracted tickets are now available for the Laura Pels Theatre in New York, staring Cynthia Nixon as the frazzled mother of a hyper, distracted, and possibly ADD eight year old. The play, a modern drama about the world we live in, eight-year-old Jesse is impossible to get ready for school; impossible to reason with; and his mom is finding it impossible to figure out what's wrong with him. Is it allergies? Is it ADD? Is it overstimulation? What about bad parenting? Could it be chemicals in food? Or maybe it's the world itself that is to blame...

This is definitely a play to enjoy, and parents will find it especially entertaining, appreciating the lengths that "Mom" goes to, to find "the answer" to her son, Jesse's, problems. After leaving Jesse at school, Mom goes to meet with different professionals throughout the day, to discover how to "fix" her son. Jesse is played by Matthew Gumley. First Mom consults a neurophysiologist, then a homeopath, followed by an allergist and finishing off with a psychiatrist. While mom rushes around trying to figure out everything, Dad, played by Peter Benson, stands by shaking his head and insisting that his son is "just being a boy."

Each effort seems to come up just short, the Ritalin that the psychologist prescribes takes away Jesse's personality and is quickly vetoed by Dad, the homeopathy just does not seem to work properly, and the list goes on. When they finally take Jesse to a special clinic, they realize that there are a lot of great things about their son that they had forgotten about. In the end Dad has a revelation, and Mom finally discovers what her son really needs. All-in-all this play is one that you will not want to miss, and you will definitely find it entertaining, especially if you have an eight-year-old of your own.

The play is written by Lisa Loomer, who has written several previous plays including: Living Out; The Waiting Room; Expecting Isabel; Broken Hearts; Birds; Bocon!; Looking for Angels; Cuts; Maria! Maria, Maria, Maria; and Accelerando. She has received grants from the NEA and NYFA and is a two-time winner for the American Theatre Critics Award and won the Kennedy Center Award for New Plays to name just a few. Her work is included in The Best Plays of 1994, 1988, and 2003. She is also a screenwriter with a new film to be released in 2010 titled Nappily Ever After starring Halle Berry.

Distracted is being directed by Mark Brokaw who recently directed the Off-Broadway production of Suddenly Last Summer and the Tony nominated revival of The Constant Wife with Kate Burton and Lynn Redgrave. Brokaw is an Associated Artist at Roundabout Theatre Company. He also serves on the executive board of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and is a member of Drama Department.

With such a stellar cast and an entertaining premise, this stage comedy promises to be a fantastic and enjoyable theatre event. You won't want to miss out on tickets to Distracted, so be sure to act fast. Tickets are currently available online.
