As is appropriate for your purposes, you can choose one or the other. Task lighting usually comes from those light sources that do not place much emphasis on aesthetics. For after all, their purpose is for aiding necessary activities. The main use of accent lights, however, is to beautify an area. Thus, they are usually very aesthetically inviting.
However, you can always have the best of both worlds by choosing a lamp that creates a balance between the two. Something that is good for your purposes, but one that can also draw attention when not in use or when not needed for necessity.
