How many times have you heard it said, experience is the best teacher? How about, success comes from learning what works and repeating it over and over again? Pretty simple, but proven to be true by many of today's gurus of doing business on the internet.

I was fortunate enough to get to spend a couple of days with John Paul Raygoza and Chris Stigson, both of whom have gained considerable recognition as highly successful internet marketers. John Paul is the CEO of several successful enterprises including Push Traffic, Your Affiliate Success, The Truth DVD Series, Free Websites, Cancun Seminars and others, while Chris is probably best known for his Lazy Million Dollar System, he is a true entrepreneur with a major presence in many niche markets like health and fitness, skin care, weight loss, etc. He operates in excess of fifty sites on a daily and on-going basis.

Spending time with these guys and getting to see and hear how they think and communicate was an eye opening educational experience. Their candor and great senses of humor made this a very enjoyable and profitable experience. I was mostly interested in what their take is on the most important factors in creating a reliable, long term source of income as an internet marketer. I know the obvious, trite, answer is to make a lot of sales, but I was looking for insight, inspiration, attitude, approach and implementation techniques that have been proven to work and can be measured in some manner so as to be adjustable.

I was able to glean these four key insights into the success formula from my brief encounter with John Paul and Chris.

Key 1. Start out with, and maintain, a confident arrogance about your ability to succeed.

Most people perceive themselves to have a forte of some sort. Something that they are very comfortable with and feel knowledgeable about. Their interest or inspiration may come from youthful exposure in the form of a hobby or a shared experience with a parent or sibling in the completion of chores or helping in the family business. In any case, it is something they know how to do, enjoy doing, and can do a lot better than the average bear, either by experience or training, or both. They display a confident arrogance when challenged to perform in this arena. You should make your forte the core of your business focus and add other elements as needed.

John Paul is a sales copy writing and marketing wizard. He has gotten his inspiration in these particular skills by studying the works of legendary copywriters like Gary "the prince of print" Halbert, Robert Collier and John Carlton. These gentlemen are known for their ability to capture the readers interest with the opening line of their advertisements or sales letters in a most compelling manner. So, too, can John Paul. That is why he focuses on ad campaigns and has a staff to do almost everything else.

Chris grew up a computer geek and learned how to build every conceivable type of individual web page and interlink them in such a way as to truly capture any visitor and redirect them to where he wanted them to go. His ability to turn a visitor into a verified, double opt-in lead is phenomenal, and a salable commodity in itself.

Getting started by focusing on a skill that they were good at and enjoyed doing, was a common key for success for both of these gurus.

Key 2. Pursue the niches that you are passionate about.

Passion plays a large part in achieving your initial success as a marketer and contributes substantially to continuing success. If you do not truly love something about the niche that you are trying to promote, you are much less likely to give it the attention it needs to be successful.

Advertising and internet sales are driven by unseen influences that are in a constant state of flux. Keywords used by search engines change with the times and culture; "bad" somehow has become to mean good, conversate has replaced converse(although spell check has not yet accepted it), and so on. Consequently, the response obtained by our ad campaigns has to be measured and adjustments made to improve our results. Likewise, ad placement impacts our results, and ad placement can vary by the ads value rating as seen by Google, MSN, Yahoo and a gaggle of lesser known search engines. Again, measure and adjust is the solution.

Both of my interviewed experts confessed to owning dormant domains and sites in niches they were not personally interested in, but took a shot at anyway, because reports of money being made there were numerous. They did not do well. Apathy? Probably!

Key 3. Instant success with unimaginable wealth is a myth that you have to reject.

These experts did not earn their reputations overnight, nor did they experience sudden wealth.

John started out as a super fan of prize fighting with a website/blog, 15 Rounds, featuring all the latest news, statistics, rankings, schedules and commentary about the world of boxing. It was his passion. It took quite awhile to build up a following, but when he did, this site helped finance his career on the internet. It is still his passion and continues to make him a nice supplemental income after more than a decade as the leader of the boxing niche.

Chris, the Geek, started out providing computer based website services like pre-sell and opt-in pages, sales pages, landing pages, customized 404 error and redirect pages and all other manner of geeky support services. He tested his sales techniques/page designs by applying them to very specific niche markets and comparing the results. This is not a get rich quick procedure but rather a method of ensuring reliable, repeatable long term results.

Both John and Chris were eventually able to document the processes and procedures that repeatably got the best results for them. They continue to market their systems as tutorials for newbies while they go on applying and refining them in new niche markets. They admit that developing and marketing their own products produces some massive short term surge income immediately following product introduction or launch into the marketplace, and the surge can be repeated through the mounting of periodic massive advertising campaigns. These are made possible by having a number of well maintained niche sites that are not spectacular performers but provide a steady, reliable source of income. Having the patience and focus to maintain numerous proven performance niche sites is a big key to internet marketing success.

Key 4. Generating targeted traffic and getting it directed to your sales page is essential to your success.

You have undoubtedly heard, "the money is in the list". This has long been the anthem of direct mail and e-mail marketeers. It refers to reaching out with your advertisements to people who are known to share your interest in a marketing niche. Not all successful marketers agree on the most effective method of getting visitors to your site, but they do agree that traffic is the essential ingredient for their success.

Implementing these four key measures does not require you to be a rocket scientist. There are plenty of freelance contractors in every internet discipline ready to bid to help you manage your website. So, carve out those disciplines that you are good at and enjoy doing yourself and farm the rest out to the experienced professionals. Focus and apply your efforts to a subject that you are passionate about and will never abandon. Strive to dominate your chosen niche and become the muse of all who embrace it. Take however long you need to own your domain and then trumpet your success. Let the world know by all means possible that you rule this realm and have no peer. Hence forth and forever more act like you own this niche!

Select your next most passionate interest and repeat what you did above over and over again! Success is within your grasp. Good luck!
