We sit back and watch a movie that we have been waiting for and enjoy ourselves, but do you notice that there are some things that have been seen over and over again in almost every movie, one of these are lamps. This everyday object that can be found in every home is one of the most famous acting props because it has been in hundreds of movies. This is the reason why I say that it is cliche to see it in this scene, in this kind of movie and used in this way. Here are some examples of such a cliche.
As self defense. It is a scene where a girl is just watching TV or talking with someone on the phone all alone in a big house, and then she suddenly feels something or someone. A little noise and she jolt of the couch to look but find no one. When she returns to watching TV or talking to the phone the culprit strikes and a tussle begins and the girl grabs the first thing she can grab is the lamp.
To scare people. As the story progresses the main character discovers that his or her home is haunted by a ghost. Many odd things happen like blood flows out of the faucet instead of water, the lights turn of and on, green gooey liquid emerges from the walls and creepy sound can be heard all over the house. At this point the main character runs to the first place he or she can think of and this place is the bedroom. Why the bedroom? That is another article. All the objects in the bedroom start to float including that lighting stuff.
For mending a broken heart. In romantic movies there are some stories that involve the person the main character is in love with either leaves, finds another man or woman or tragically dies. If this happens the main character often secludes himself or herself inside his or her room and start to think about their past relationship, asking and looking for an answer to why this happened. Because of the great depression being felt inside his or her heart the main character places the picture of the one she or he loves in a place where the picture could be seen from the moment he closes his eyes to the moment the light opens under a lamps shade.
Used as a weapon. This happens in action movies when the hero is attacked inside a home, can be his or someone elses house, and defends himself against his assailants. He first uses his hands to deflect the punches and runs around the house so as to not get hit by the weapons carried by the enemies. This is the time when the hero looks for a weapon of his own. He reaches for that lighting stuff that is thin, long, made of metal and easy to swing around.
These are just some of the kinds of movie and scenes where the everyday lamp stars in. There are many more and it is up to you if you got a keen sense of observation to notice some lamps in a particular scene. Give it a try.
