What Are You Attracting?

What do you think about most of the time? What are you attracting? Most people are thinking the same thoughts over and over again. Eckhart Tolle believes that "about 80 to 90 percent of most people's thinking is not only repetitive and useless, but because of its dysfunctional and often negative nature, much of it is also harmful."

Most of these thoughts probably originated when you were a small child and incapable of examining whether they were true or not. You probably thought "My parents know everything, so if they say this about me it must be true." What you learn in childhood is extremely powerful. Bruce Lipton compares it with putting some information in a computer's hard drive. Once it's in there, it is extremely difficult to get out.

If you are like most people, there is probably an undercurrent of fear running through your thoughts. This can range from an uncomfortable feeling that something's not quite right all the way to outright fear. We live in a society that is based on fear. Even our religions are based on fear. Traditionally, God is an angry and jealous being who will send you to hell if you don't behave. We simply do not know what unconditional love is.

The only love we have experienced in our lives is that which only exists when we behave ourselves. It only exists when we become what someone else wants us to be. Since we can never be what someone else wants us to be without sacrificing ourselves, we are always afraid that we will either lose their love or lose our love for ourselves.

If we are always thinking bad thoughts we will always attract bad things. How do we get around this? We need to learn how to see the beauty in all things. One way to do this is to deliberately, consciously, seek out beautiful things. Marci Shirmoff suggests giving out awards all day in your mind for things. See how many beautiful and inspiring things you can find in a day. Become aware of the magnificent things all around you. Take a moment to savor things that are pleasing. "Stop and smell the flowers".

Gratitude is another thing that is very important. Now that you can see all the beautiful things you are surrounded by, offer thanks to God. Know that if God didn't love every thing (including you), God would never have given each of us (no matter how many faults we have) all these wonderful blessings. Be thankful that you are alive. No matter how little you have, there are always things to be thankful for in your life. You may want a shiny new car with reliable air conditioning, for example, but you can be thankful that you have a car at all and do not have to rely on public transit or on getting a ride from a friend. You may want to be able to afford to eat out at restaurants more often, but you can be thankful that you are able to get three good meals a day, instead of the cup of rice that is the entire daily food of some people in developing countries.

Now you can choose to focus on what you really want. One thing that is very important is to that you must not expect to get it at the appointed time. This takes the worry out of wanting something; and worry just pushes away what you want. If you can just let go, it takes the pressure off of you to have everything go the way you want. Let the Universe figure out when is the right time for you to get it, and the best way for it to come. Look for the good in your life, be thankful for it, let go, and then you will attract the things you really want.
