Self Improvement Lessons I Have Learned

I come from a family with two parents who were both dealing with deep emotional scars from childhood. I was their eldest child, and in addition to that I had an unknown disorder that led to seizures and hallucinations, so I bore the brunt of their insecurities. I've been
alone, and depressed, most of my life. Over the years, I have learned a few lessons about improving life. I would like to share some of them with you.

1) You are not responsible for other people, and they are not responsible for you. Everyone has to make their own way in life. You came into this world with a different purpose than anyone else, and only you can know how best to fulfill it. If you allow other people to be responsible for your actions (you blame them or complain about them) you become a victim. If you try to be responsible for other people's actions ("maybe they did that because of something I said or did") you will be frustrated and resentful. Just like you, they have to make their own way.

2) You and Everyone Else are Equally Special
We are always telling ourselves that we are better than, or worse than, other people. We tend to focus on just one trait when we do this. For any one trait, as Desiderata reminds us "There will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself". People are made up of all kinds of different personalities and experiences, and we are all dealt a different set of cards. It does not matter what your hand is; what matters is what you do with it. One person may be expert at finding a cure for cancer and another may be expert and taking beautiful photos, but we all have our own talents and each one of those talents is needed in the world. Even people who are mentally and physically handicapped have strengths and talents; even if all they can do is to just bring a smile to people's faces they are needed in the world.

3) You Can Be, Do, and Have Anything You Want
People always say "I will believe it when I see it" but they have it backward. A more accurate statement is "I will see it when I believe it". We are creating our own life, but we are always creating what we believe to be true. If I believe that life is "nasty, brutish, and short" that is the kind of life I will have. If I believe that life is wonderful and magical, that is the kind of life I will have. We run into trouble because we
believe that our life tomorrow will be the same as it was today. That belief ensures that your life will never get any better. The same things will keep happening over and over. When you have the faith that you can indeed create a better life, your life will just get better and better.

5) Don't Assume, Always Ask.
It is so easy to assume you know what other people are thinking or doing. Of course they are doing and thinking the same things we would if we were in their situation. The truth is that they have an entirely different view of the world than you do, and they are thinking
and doing according to their viewpoint, not yours. We make assumptions because we are afraid to ask for clarity. We need to always ask questions, whenever we don't understand something. Keep asking until you know the truth.

We overestimate or underestimate ourselves because we have not taken the time to ask ourselves important questions and answer them. We assume that other people will judge us, victimize us, abuse us, and blame us, because this is what we do to ourselves. We assume that what other people tell us about ourselves is true. In truth, what other people say to us has more to do with how they see the world than with who we really are. Never assume you know who you are. Ask God for guidance.

4) Trust Your Intuition
Your intuition is God telling you what you need to do in order to reach your potential. God knows so much better than you do what opportunities are available that are the right ones for you and the best ways for you to take advantage of them. Many times in my life, my intuition has guided me to opportunities I would never have noticed otherwise. You need to be aware and get your ego to cease its chattering in order to listen for intuitive guidance, and to be able to interpret its often subtle messages. Meditation is a wonderful practice for this.

Remember that we are all worthy people who have talents that the world needs. As long as we have faith in ourselves and our abilities, we can use our inborn creativity, and those talents, to be, do, and have anything we want. If we always ask other people for clarity and we trust our intuition we will know just what to do in order to achieve our dreams.
