The Good, Bad And Bizarre Of The Classifieds World

By: John Donaldson

If you've never tried advertising on a classified ads site then you are probably missing out on potential buyers.

Most businesses, both large and small, don't even consider classified ads sites as part of their marketing strategy. But they should, and here's why.

The classified ads sector has spawned some huge online players, who generate, on a daily basis, a huge amount of traffic. They are not to be ignored.

Take Gumtree, for example, one of the giants in the market. It started out as a small local classified ads and community site in London, some eight years ago. Now it boasts a million visitors every month. Amazing. Wouldn't you benefit from a little Gumtree traffic? Sure you would.

Another huge player in the classified ads sector is Loot, combining major print publications with a massive online presence. It all comes under the Associated Newspapers banner which owns the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, Metro and other print titles.

Loot has been in the buying and selling business for over 20 years with a print and online reach of some 2 million every month. Around half a million people visit loot.com alone.

There are other major online classified ads sites, including friday-ad.co.uk, classifiedads.com and vivastreet.co.uk, which displays nearly half a million ads. A lot of ads and a lot of traffic which just about any business could make good use of.

That's only a few of the top sites. There are many more. Equally, there are hundreds more lesser sites, residing lower down in the pecking order. They shouldn't be ignored either although traffic to these sites is much harder to gauge.

As with the major players, one of the many positives is the ad placing process is usually easy and free. So why not sign up with a few of the minor sites at a time. Shouldn't take you long to do and the combined traffic should be worth the effort. But nothing is guaranteed. Use the sites that return even a modest amount of traffic. Discard the rest.

One such "minor" player is freebieads.co.uk - my classified ads site, which has been on the go for about a year now! Hopefully, the site will become a major player in the not too distant future. Time will tell.

With around 5,000 visitors a month and some 500 ads, freebieads.co.uk may not be in the Gumtree, Loot or Vivastreet league. But even these major sites were small once-upon-a-time.

Right, let's lighten the mood slightly and finish off with a look at some of the more unusual ads posted from time to time. After all, a classified ad site surely reflects the world we live in. And sometimes it's a weird world indeed.

Loot, for example, lists a few of the more bizarre ads they've seen, which include the selling of a Mr Whippy ice cream van, Australian shark cartilage, manure, a pencil sharpener collection, an organic wormery and a life size dalek.

Even British royalty have been known to use their services. The Duchess of Kent, apparently, sold her second-hand fridge through Loot in 2004.

There you have it, the ultimate proof. If classified ads are good enough for the British aristocracy, then surely they are good enough for the likes of you and me, too? You bet they are. So what are you waiting for? Get posting those ads!
