How to maintain the basic system utilities:

If you find that your computer is responding slow, or taking too much time to boot, then chances remain that there are some corrupted files or errors in its registry or in its hard drive. Most often, PC users who have already used their PC for over a year encounter these problems. You just can overcome these by running some basic system tools to keep your system clean and run smoothly.

First and foremost, check what is there inside your PC. You can easily find some basic system utilities that are capable of solving your problems. If you are using Windows XP, then you can easily locate the disk defragmenter by clicking Start / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Defragmenter. Running this is essential, as Windows handles the files in a “logical” manner and not in a “practical” manner. In simpler terms, whenever you save a file, say a 3 page document, Windows will break it up and save it where it can fit properly. This means two pages in one place while one in another place. Thus, the file gets fragmented. Whenever you open this file, your computer needs to read thru two different places, taking more of your time. Therefore, if it was located at one place then it would have been much faster, isn’t it? The disk defragmenter looks for files that are fragmented and puts them in one place. Its running depends on the volume of data in your hard drive. It may take 15 minutes or 5 hours, or more. You can even run it automatically by setting a proper schedule. Run it once every fortnight, see how faster your PC responds.

If you are using Windows XP, make sure to update it regularly. You can simply do it by connecting to the Internet and clicking on Start/Help - Support/Pick a Task/Windows Update. Updates include the latest patches and security fixes of your operating system and your drivers. You need to restart your PC after the updates get completed, to get the best results. Though it’s a slow process (especially the major updates), it’s a necessary one.

When you visit some specific websites on a regular basis, your PC automatically loads some programs temporarily, in order to open it faster for the next time. These files remain in your PC for a limited time and are recycled with the new pages accordingly. This may seem not to be a problem, but it is. These make your computer slower, but it’s not noticeable as the Internet connections remain a bit fast. You need to clear these files, else your PC will search through these files the next time you check the respective websites. These load the same old pages, and will make you see outdated pages, and not the updated one. Whichever software you use to surf through the Internet, just click under the tools options and select the delete temp file option. Do make sure to select the delete all offline files option. These are a few basic uses of system utilities which need to be run periodically in order to make your computer free from blue screens and crashes.
